Shortly after AT&T’s CEO announced one of the company’s former "babies" is buying the mother ship, he went on the air to talk about it.

Notice as David Dorman is interviewed by Fox News Channel’s Neil Cavuto, a producer in the control booth is listening intently for quotes in order to pluck them for display in the lower level of the screen.

Dorman keeps it simple. And the benefit is that what he came to say-in strong, positive, stand alone statements, by the way–is captured by that producer and typed out onto the screen. Talk about instant results!

Also important in this clip: Cavuto is predictably interruptive. It’s his style.one of the things we like so much about him because of the challenge it presents to a strong performance by interviewees. Dorman does not let it ruffle him. He takes the interruptions with ease, staying on message and in his own comfort zone.

He’s a great example to his peers and others, as well, on how to be prepared, confident and successful in major league interviews. Great job, Dave!

The Media Trainers® Re–winder Reminder:

  • Reporters (and even producers in a TV control booth) are listening for sound bites, statements that sum up an idea neatly.
  • Deliver one message at a time; keep it concise.
  • Keep your cool. Interruptions can be a blessing, leading you to your most important message.
  • When you’re interrupted, stop talking. Then make sure you repeat your message in full after the interruption.
