 Clip 1
A question pregnant with a built-in premise.

 Clip 2
A question meant to knock him off his feet

Police, community and civil liberties organizations have been debating the pros and cons of Taser guns after some extraordinary events involving these tools meant to control people and situations. Stun guns are being blamed for deaths, and in one case, a Taser was used by a cop on a young elementary school child.
Enter Rick Smith, CEO of Taser International. Called on to explain why his product should be in use, Smith met the challenge with authority and a positive attitude. He easily could have been defensive in the face of some of the questions Stuart Varney fired at him on Fox News Channel. Instead, Smith listened, heard the perspective of each question, and responded on his terms, from his perspective.
Despite prejudicial video that aired as he gave his answers, Smith remained calm, positive and on point. How Fox used the video was beyond his control. How he answered was very much in his control, and he set an example others should follow.
The first clip opens with a question pregnant with a built–in premise. The second clip begins with a question meant to knock him off balance. In neither case did Smith bite. He kept his balance and delivered effective messaging to his target audiences.
The Media Trainers® Re–winder Reminder:
- You have absolute control over two primary elements in an interview. How you react emotionally and the words you say. Staying positive is always preferable. Your answers are potential sound bites or quotes.
- Remember, the interviewer/reporter is not your target audience. Who are you really talking to? And what do you want them to hear and, more importantly, feel?
- Better to confront the negative stories than to hide. Failure to appear simply helps give the stories more life and rumor and speculation to fill the void you leave behind.
