Executive Rewind: Tribune Co. Goes to Zell

"There's a new sheriff in town," he said very matter-of-factly to his hometown Chicago press corps. Sam Zell, best known for his Midas touch in real estate now owns the Tribune Company and he’s on a mission to save newspapers.

As soon as the $8.2B deal was closed, Zell made a point of visiting the company and its employees at one of his newspapers, The Chicago Tribune. In addition to announcing his presence, he predicted a bright future for newspapers as long as they adapt to change.

Sam Zell is a different kind of executive; fascinating to observe, but difficult to emulate. His success is indisputable. He both talks the talk and walks the walk. So, while he’s not the most gifted orator you've ever encountered, people have come to know that when he talks, they need to listen because he says what he means.

His casual appearance is a strong message in itself: he likes to be on a first name basis with his people, he's willing to get his hands dirty, he's eager to share ideas, he believes in open communications and there's no need for a suits vs. troops class system.

That is a perception executives have the opportunity to help cultivate through the media. But, always remember the media can keep track of you and monitor your statements against your actions. Also, with or without your participation, they continue to reach your most important audiences. Consistency is hugely important both in message and, when necessary, action.

The Media Trainers® Re–winder Reminder:

  • Executives can cultivate credibility with consistency in their messaging through the media, and through their actions.
  • Go into interviews with a plan and its long term impact. Thanks to the Internet, what you say today can be resurrected years later.
  • Your appearance is critical to your messaging. What is it you need your target audiences to feel, think and/or do? Dress and body language are major communicators.
